Can You Download Songs Using Spotify Free?
All of Spotify's content can be streamed online by both free and paid users. Downloads are a different story, though. Spotify free users can only download podcasts.
Spotify Premium users can download a wide range of apps for their phones and computers. This means that you can download albums, playlists, podcasts, and songs to five different devices to listen to when you're not online.
Download Limits for Spotify Premium Users
As a Premium user, you might be excited to think about all the extra benefits you can now enjoy. But what if we told you that even if you are a Premium member, there are times when Spotify won't download.
Even if you have Spotify Premium, there are a few things you should know about how much you can download:
Only works with Spotify: Songs you download from Spotify can only be played on that app. You can't keep these downloads on your device or use them in other music apps. So, if you wanted to download the songs and then stop using Spotify, you can't do that because the two are tied together.
Spotify lets you download up to 10,000 songs per device and a total of five devices at most. This means that each of those devices can have 10,000 different downloads. The bad thing is that if you download songs on a sixth device, you'll lose the songs you downloaded on your device that you use the least.
You have to log in before you can listen to Spotify offline, but you can do so for up to 30 days. But if you don't use the Internet for more than 30 days, you'll lose access to the songs you've downloaded and have to get them all over again. If you use Spotify, you should go online at least once a month to avoid this. This lets the servers of the app check to see if your subscription plan is still active.
Downloads are tied to Premium: You need a Premium account to listen to the content you've downloaded on Spotify. So, if your subscription runs out and you don't renew it, the content you've downloaded will be taken away.
How to Delete Downloaded Songs on Spotify
If you're running out of space on your device, you can delete some of the Spotify songs you've downloaded. The only catch is that you can't delete individual songs, only whole albums or playlists.
Go to the playlist or album you want to get rid of, and then click the green arrow pointing down. When it's gray, it means that those song downloads have been taken away. This is a way to delete apps on both mobile and desktop devices.
If you're sure you want to get rid of all the songs you've downloaded, you can use the "Remove all downloads" option. This is how:
1. Open the Spotify app on your phone.
2. Tap the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen.
3. Scroll down until Storage appears.
4. Tap Remove all downloads.

What Are the Best Settings for Spotify Music Downloads?
Spotify says that you need at least 1GB of space for the app to work well. This is where cache files of songs and podcasts are kept so that they can load faster on slow connections. Song downloads, on the other hand, will take up more space depending on how high the quality is set. Spotify Premium has five options for the quality of the music you stream or download.
Automatic: depends on your network connection speed.
Low: 24 kbit/s
Normal: 96 kbit/s
High: 160 kbit/s
Very High: 320 kbit/s
When you download songs, the most important thing to remember is that the better the quality, the more storage space it will take up.
Since the average length of a song is about 3:28, or 197 seconds, a Very High song download would take up 7.88 MB of space. On the other hand, the Low setting uses about 0.18 MB per minute, which means that a song would only take up 0.59 MB of space.
Also, if your device doesn't have much free space, it's best to download songs in Low or Normal quality. But if you don't want to listen to songs with lower quality, you might as well just stream.
On the other hand, you can download songs in High or Very High quality if you have a slow Internet connection and enough space.
Final Thoughts
Keep in mind that you'll need to go online at least once every 30 days to keep your downloads. Spotify says this is so it can track how often you listen to music so it can pay artists.
If you can't get your music to download, make sure your device isn't in sleep mode, double-check that your Internet connection is working, and make sure your device has at least 1GB of free space.
If the files you downloaded won't play, make sure the download worked by seeing if the arrow icon has turned green. You can also try restarting the Spotify app or turning on Offline mode to stop your Internet connection from interfering.
If that doesn't work, Spotify says you should try reinstalling the app, which means you'll have to download any saved music or podcasts again.
