This guide has everything you need to know about Snapchat.
What is Snapchat and what is the purpose of Snapchat?
Snapchat is a popular multimedia messaging app to exchange photos and videos (called "snaps") that disappear a few seconds after they have been viewed by the recipients. This app is created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, Reggie Brown and developed by Snap Inc. and was first launched in 2011.
The core functionality
Snapchat is to create "snaps" (photos, or videos), customize or edit them using filters, effects, drawings, etc. and share them with friends.
Unlike other social networks where your content will be kept forever unless you choose to delete it, your snaps will disappear after a certain amount of time after they have been viewed.
Stories and Discover
In 2013, Snapchat introduced the "My Story" feature. It allows users to compile snaps into storylines which are accessible to all of their friends. In 2014, the "Out Stories" feature was introduced. It allows users to contribute their snaps of specific events, holidays, and other things happening in the world on a particular day to "public".
In 2017, the Custom Stories feature was introduced letting groups create stories together.
The Snap Map feature was introduced in 2017 which lets users share their location with friends. Your location will display on a map in real time.
Geo-filters: It allows special graphical overlays to be available only if the user visits a specific place.
Snapchat lens: It allows you to add special effects such as face lenses or world lenses (rainbows, sky, etc.) to your photos while you are taking a snap.
Snapstore: It's a place to buy Snap-related items.
Snapcode: When you sign up for Snapchat, you will have your own unique QR code. It can be used to add friends by taking a snap of the other person's code.
Friend Emojis: As an incentive to send content regularly, emoji icons will appear next to the names of contacts that the user frequently interacts with. It helps you keep track of your friends on Snapchat.
